One of my favorite places to climb is Red Rocks in Gloucester, MA (near the intersection of Rtes. 128 & 133 - you follow a path that leaves from the parking lot on the northwest corner of the intersection and parallels 128 for about 1/2 mile before turning right and uphill). Admittedly, the selection of routes is somewhat limited, but if you’re from the North Shore as I am, it is really hard to beat Red Rocks for its views of Ipswich Bay and the quality of the slab climbing. A little wet and buggy in the spring and early summer, Red Rocks is probably best in the late summer and early fall. In addition to the routes on Red Rock itself there are countless boulder problems in the surrounding woods that you could spent days exploring. Another perk is the presence of some great beaches only a ten minute drive away.
Just got back from a trip to Seneca Rocks, WV. Great time...great climbs. For anyone living in the Mid-Atlantic Seneca is a must. The place has a deserved reputation for stiff-ratings and great exposure as well as interesting and varied climbing. Triple-Overhang was one of the more memorable routes we got on. Nearby Seneca Shadows campground is also one of the best I've stayed at anywhere in the National Forest system.
During my years in college at the University of Colorado I spent a lot of time climbing in Boulder Canyon nd it remains one of my favorite laces to climb today. Obviously most people think of Eldorado Canyon and the Flatirons when they think of Boulder climbing, and for good reason. Boulder Canyon also offers some great climbing however, and it certainly warrants a day or two of any week long trip to Boulder. One of the greatest things about Boulder Canyon is how different the climbing is from other areas in the immediate vicinity, and how varied the climbing is within the canyon itself. Boulder Canyon is composed of Boulder Creek granodiorite which provides for much different climbing than that found in Eldo or the Flatirons. In Boulder Canyon you can find great slab climbs, some excellent granite crack climbs, and some fine face climbs. You can find a number of good sport climbs in addition to many traditionally protected climbs. Some of the walls are th Bell Buttress, Castle Rock,The Riviera, Animal World, Vampire Rock, Elephant Rock, and Sherwood Forest all of which have some excellent climbs. Next time you're in Boulder you should stop to check it out.
